It was the third-highest aggregate in an ODI, with 811 runs scored across two innings. Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, was unimpressed with the match’s big score because he considered the pitch gave little for the bowlers.
India defeated the West Indies by eight wickets on Wednesday to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, with five hundreds, including a record-breaking double century from Shubman Gill, headlining a run-fest in Guwahati.
Together, the bowlers conceded 807 runs, the third-highest total in ODI history. It was particularly tough for quick bowlers to make an impression. India’s pacers captured just three wickets between them, conceding more than nine runs per over. The four pacers from the West Indies, on the other hand, took only two wickets while scoring more than eight runs per over, with two conceding more than ten.
In an interview with broadcasters following India’s series triumph in Guwahati, Gautam Gambhir urged grounds that allow for more intense bat-and-ball action.
Gautam Gambhir has asked bowlers to be patient following Auqib Nabi’s expensive debut.
Auqib Nabi, an Indian debutant, was among the bowlers who struggled. While the West Indies achieved a big total, the pacer conceded 84 runs in 8.5 overs without taking a wicket.
However, Gautam Gambhir highlighted that bowlers should not be judged solely on their numbers, especially in instances where conditions are not favourable. India’s head coach feels that when judging a bowler’s performance, plan execution should be prioritised.

Gambhir went on to remark that rather than focusing exclusively on the final scores, the coaching staff first assesses if a bowler has followed the plans correctly. He also underlined the need of assisting young bowlers such Mohammad Nabi, who was making his international debut.
