On October 31, 2026, the Perth Scorchers will play their inaugural WBBL 12 contest at the WACA against the Melbourne Renegades. Beth Mooney will lead the club for the first time in six seasons. The wicketkeeper-batter has been formally named the team’s new captain, succeeding Sophie Devine, who held the position for six seasons.
Beth Mooney has played 80 games for the Scorchers after joining them from the Brisbane Heat in 2020. She has scored more runs than any other player in WBBL history, totaling 5,600 over all seasons. In addition, she has won the WBBL three times, with two different teams.
Becky Grundy, the Scorchers’ head coach, expressed entire trust in the appointment.
She praised her time in Western Australia, calling the job “a little bit daunting.” Devine joined the Scorchers in the same season as Beth Mooney, and with 77 appearances, she is the team’s most capped foreign player. In 2025, she led the Scorchers to their fourth championship match, but they were defeated by the Hobart Hurricanes.
While discussing her relationship with the state, Beth Mooney realized the significance of her position.
Beth Mooney’s 80 appearances for the Scorchers since arriving in 2020 demonstrate her commitment to the team. Her 5,600 WBBL runs, the highest of any player in the tournament, enable her to set expectations for a squad that reached the 2025 WBBL final before falling to the Hobart Hurricanes.
What impact has Sophie Devine had on the Perth Scorchers?
Devine, a New Zealand international, joined the Scorchers during the 2020 season alongside Mooney and went on to become the team’s most-capped overseas representative with 77 matches. Her critical moment as captain came in 2021, when she led the Scorchers to the WBBL championship.

Following that victory, Devine led the squad to its fourth championship game, the 2025 WBBL final, but the Hobart Hurricanes proved too strong. She has not mentioned the reason for her departure as captain. Mooney’s career before heading to Perth included back-to-back WBBL titles with the Brisbane Heat in 2018-19 and 2019-20.
