Daren Sammy, the head coach of the West Indies, has expressed apprehension regarding the flat batting surfaces that are currently available in the three-match ODI series against India. He has referred to the circumstances as a “bat-versus-bat contest” and has acknowledged that they are not optimal for bowlers.
Daren Sammy stated the following in an interview with India TV prior to the third ODI. The second one-day international (ODI) was played on September 30, 2026, at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Both teams scored an unbelievable number of runs. Three batters—John Campbell, Shai Hope (104), and Amir Jangoo (114)—scored hundreds as the West Indies amassed 405 runs. For the first time in the history of ODIs, the West Indies scored 400 runs.
After chasing down 406 runs in 43.3 overs, India won by 8 wickets with 39 balls remaining. Presently, the chase is the most successful run total in the annals of ODI cricket in India. Rohit Sharma achieved 101 runs during the chase. India has secured a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
What was Daren Sammy’s statement regarding the pitch conditions?
Sammy acknowledged that the pitches at each location in the series have gradually improved for batting. He emphasised that the conditions of bowlers deteriorate under the lights, which complicates the application of pressure by his assault. Nevertheless, he maintained that the bowling organization is still responsible for adapting and devising strategies to mitigate the opposition.
In the future, how does Daren Sammy plan to put his bowlers to the test?
Daren Sammy acknowledged that West Indies bowlers have not been as consistent as they could have been, despite the favourable batting conditions. He encouraged his team to achieve greater consistency in the third ODI by emphasising that both bowling attacks are subject to the same pitch conditions.
